Standard RTA analyzers (like single-microphone phone apps) are single-channel: they only show you what the microphone hears. This is useless for system tuning because it does not account for the electrical signal leaving the console. 3. Setting the Reference Delay: Finding T=0
A transfer function measures the time difference between the reference signal (arriving instantly via copper wire) and the measurement signal (arriving slower via the speed of sound through air). If you do not compensate for this time delay, your phase trace will look like a continuous, unreadable spiral of wraps.

Smaart sends a sync pulse, measures the arrival time at the microphone capsule in milliseconds, and applies a matching internal delay to the reference signal. 5. Verifying Crossover Summation
Once you delay-align your subwoofers to your main arrays, use Smaart to verify the summation. First, measure the magnitude level of the mains alone at the crossover frequency. Next, measure the subs alone. Both should read equal volume (e.g., 80dB SPL).
Now, turn **both** systems on. If they are aligned in phase, they will sum together, resulting in a **6dB gain increase** (reading 86dB SPL on your analyzer). If the volume remains at 80dB or drops, your systems are out of phase, and you must check your delay alignment or invert the polarities.
