Walk into any venue at 11:00 AM on a show day, and you will likely hear the exact same sound: a deafening, aggressive, hissing “SHHHHHHH” blasting through the main PA system. Testing and tuning a PA system is a noisy, annoying process. But that hissing sound is the lifeblood of system alignment.
If you are new to system tuning, you might open up a signal generator app or the oscillator on your digital console and see a list of options: Pink Noise, White Noise, Sine Waves, Sweeps, and Impulse Responses. A lot of young engineers just pick one at random, unmute the matrix, and start looking at their RTA. That is a dangerous game. If you send the wrong type of test signal into a massive line array, you can actually fry your high-frequency drivers in a matter of seconds. Let’s break down the physics of these signals and when you should use them on a gig.
White Noise: The Tweeter Killer
Let’s start with White Noise, mostly because it is the one you should almost never use to tune a PA. White Noise is a random signal that contains equal energy per frequency (linear distribution). That sounds balanced on paper, but it is a disaster for human ears and loudspeakers.
The gap between 50Hz and 100Hz is exactly one octave, and it contains 50 individual frequencies. The gap between 10kHz and 20kHz is also one octave, but it contains 10,000 individual frequencies. Because White Noise outputs equal energy for every single hertz, the higher octaves contain massively more energy than the lower octaves. If you blast White Noise through a PA, it sounds incredibly harsh, shrill, and piercing. More critically, you are sending a lethal amount of electrical energy directly into the delicate compression drivers (tweeters). You will overheat the voice coils and blow the drivers in seconds. Keep it muted on your gig.
Pink Noise: The Gold Standard for Live Audio
If White Noise is equal energy per frequency, Pink Noise is equal energy per octave (logarithmic distribution). To make a test signal sound balanced to the human ear (which hears in octaves, not linear hertz), engineers apply a mathematical filter that rolls off the high frequencies at a rate of 3dB per octave.
Because of this roll-off, the octave between 50Hz and 100Hz contains the exact same amount of acoustic energy as the octave between 10kHz and 20kHz. When you listen to Pink Noise, it sounds like a rushing waterfall. More importantly, Pink Noise plays perfectly with your console's RTA. Because a standard RTA visualizes sound in fractions of an octave, sending Pink Noise into an RTA will result in a flat line across the screen. When you need to level-match your subs to your mains, check the frequency response of a room, or verify that all the drivers in your line array are firing, Pink Noise is your go-to signal.
Pure Sine Waves: The Troubleshooting Tool
A Pure Sine Wave is a single, continuous frequency. It’s the piercing beep at 1kHz, or the window-rattling hum at 50Hz. You do not use Sine Waves to tune the frequency response of a PA system, but they are the ultimate troubleshooting tool. If you are trying to check subwoofer phase coupling, sending a 60Hz or 80Hz sine wave makes it easy to walk the room and hear where the bass is coupling and where it is canceling out.
Sine waves are also the best way to find mechanical rattles. Sweep a pure sine wave between 40Hz and 200Hz. When you hit the resonant frequency of the room, that loose lighting fixture or vibrating air duct will reveal itself instantly, giving stagehands time to go tape it down before doors open.
Sine Sweeps (Chirps): The Phase-Linear Secret
Modern system engineers relying on dual-channel FFT software have largely moved on to Sine Sweeps, or "Chirps." A Sine Sweep is a pure tone that starts at the lowest frequency (like 20Hz) and rapidly sweeps up to the highest frequency (20kHz) in a fraction of a second.
A Sine Sweep concentrates all of the system’s acoustic energy into one specific frequency at a time. The measurement software knows exactly what frequency is being generated at any given millisecond, so it completely ignores external background noise (like HVAC rumbling or forklift beeps). You get crystal-clear measurement data without having to deafen the venue. By capturing the time-coherent phase response, sweeps are critical for calculating precise system adjustments and aligning phase traces across crossover points.
Impulse Response: The Time-Domain Knife
For high-precision time-of-arrival calculations, we use an Impulse Response. An impulse is a theoretically instantaneous, infinitely high-amplitude spike of energy. In the real world, system techs generate this using a short transient signal or extract it mathematically from a sine sweep or dual-channel FFT.
The Impulse Response represents how a speaker and a room respond to a transient hit. By analyzing the impulse response peak, you can measure the exact arrival time of a sound source down to the microsecond. This is the core of modern measurement systems because it shows you not only the direct arrival of the sound but also room reflections (slap-backs, echoes, and late room resonances). Understanding the timing of these reflections is vital for optimizing intelligibility in highly reflective rooms.
The Real-World Measurement Workflow
To build a cohesive PA system, you must use these signals in a structured sequence:
- Identify the zero-reference using an Impulse Response to measure absolute arrival time of the main PA hang.
- Time-align secondary sources (like front fills, subs, and delays) using the impulse peaks to match this reference.
- Verify the phase trace using sine sweeps or dual-channel FFT noise measurements around the crossover regions.
- Tune the broad tonal balance of the room with pink noise on your RTA to handle major room resonances and EQ adjustments.
- Listen to reference tracks to verify translation and train your ear to catch any lingering problems before soundcheck.
