A few years ago, most live sound engineers only had to worry about the audience sitting in the room. Today, you are often mixing for a dual audience: 500 people in a ballroom and 5,000 people online, with clients monitoring stream analytics in real time. Hybrid events have become a industry standard. The biggest mistake a live engineer can make in this scenario is sending the FOH mix directly to the streaming encoder. Because room acoustics and PA reinforcement do not translate to online listeners, a direct FOH feed will sound thin, inconsistent, and dry. Let’s look at the setup, signal flow, and processing required for successful hybrid audio.
Why the FOH Mix Does Not Translate to Broadcast
The FOH mix is designed to work in harmony with the acoustic space. The FOH engineer takes into account the physical sound of the instruments on stage (such as the drum kit and guitar cabinets) and the acoustic reflections of the room. If a snare drum is loud acoustically, the FOH engineer will add very little snare to the PA. However, the streaming audience does not hear the physical stage volume or the room reflections. If you send the FOH mix to the stream, the drums will sound quiet and thin, the vocals will feel detached, and the overall mix will lack energy.
Conversely, the FOH mix relies on the room's natural reverberation to fill out the sound. On a livestream, this acoustic wash is missing, exposing dry, raw feeds. To deliver a professional mix to both audiences, you must create two separate mixes: one optimized for the physical room, and another designed for the streaming listeners.
Proper Hybrid Audio Signal Flow
To mix for both FOH and broadcast, you must split the stage inputs before the mixing stage, routing them to two separate consoles or separate mix buses on a single large-format desk. This ensures that EQ, compression, and fader adjustments made for the room do not affect the online stream.

Broadcast Mix Priorities and Processing
A broadcast mix requires different processing than a room mix:
- Vocal Presence: The lead vocals must sit on top of the mix, requiring more gain and consistent dynamic control. Use a de-esser to control sibilance, and high-pass the vocals around 100Hz to eliminate stage rumble.
- Dynamic Range Control: Livestream listeners often listen on mobile devices, laptops, or television speakers with limited dynamic range. Apply gentle bus compression (such as a 2:1 ratio with a slow attack and fast release) to the main broadcast mix to glue the elements together and maintain consistent average levels.
- Stereo Imaging: In-room mixes are often kept mono-compatible to ensure even coverage across the venue. On stream, you can leverage the full stereo field, panning instruments and backing vocals to create a wider, more natural stereo image.
- Loudness Normalization: Aim for a target loudness of -16 LUFS (Loudness Units Full Scale) for web streams, or -24 LUFS for broadcast television. This prevents the stream from sounding quiet compared to other online content.
Dante Integration for Streaming
Dante networking makes routing multitrack audio to a streaming computer straightforward. You can connect your mixing consoles and the streaming computer to a gigabit switch. Using Dante Virtual Soundcard (DVS) on the streaming PC, you can patch up to 64 channels of uncompressed digital audio directly into your streaming software (such as OBS or vMix), eliminating analog noise and ground loop issues.
When routing over a network, ensure your network switches do not use Energy Efficient Ethernet (EEE) to prevent clocking dropouts. You can verify network signal flow and clock stability using the Dante Controller software.
Managing Latency in Hybrid Events
Livestreams introduce latency due to video encoding, platform buffering, and network transmission, often resulting in a delay of 5 to 15 seconds. If your event includes a live Q&A session where online attendees ask questions to presenters in the room, this delay must be managed. A dedicated return audio channel must be set up, allowing presenters to hear the remote questions without echo or feedback. Instruct presenters to wait for the host to read questions rather than trying to converse in real time.
