"Zero" on an analog meter represented a nominal operating voltage (+4 dBu). If you pushed a transient signal past 0 and into the +3 or +6 lights, the analog circuitry would saturate smoothly. Digital consoles do not work this way. Digital meters are measured in dBFS (Decibels relative to Full Scale). In the digital domain, **0 dBFS is the absolute ceiling**. There is no "+3" or "+6." If a digital signal hits 0 dBFS, the Analog-to-Digital Converter (ADC) runs out of bits to describe the voltage. The waveform peak is chopped off, resulting in harsh, square-wave digital clipping. If you drive a digital preamp into clipping, the distortion is permanent.

Most professional digital consoles (including Yamaha, Allen & Heath, and DiGiCo) are calibrated so that a standard analog operating level (0 VU / +4 dBu) aligns with **-18 dBFS** on the digital scale. This means your target gain for every channel should bounce around -18 dBFS. On mixers like the Behringer X32 or A&H SQ5, this corresponds to the signal living in the middle green area, barely lighting up the first yellow LED on the loudest hits.
3. Why Safety Headroom Saves the Show
Musicians play significantly louder during a performance than during soundcheck. Lower stage volume and low adrenaline during soundcheck mean the band plays quietly; during the show, vocal levels and drum transients can easily jump by 6dB to 10dB.
If you set your gain to -18 dBFS at soundcheck, this adrenaline spike simply eats into your safety headroom without clipping the preamps. The mix stays punchy, wide, and clean, rather than distorting at the input stage.
4. Mix Bus Summing Headroom: Managing the Sum
Another critical reason for keeping channel inputs at -18 dBFS is **Mix Bus Summing**. When you combine multiple channels together into a single Stereo Mix Bus (Master L/R), their voltages sum together logarithmically. If you have 32 channels of audio, and every single channel is gained up hot to peak at -3 dBFS, their combined level will overload the Master Mix Bus summing engine or clip the output Digital-to-Analog Converters (DACs).
While modern digital mixing engines process audio internally using 32-bit or 40-bit floating-point math (which provides virtually infinite internal headroom), the final output converters still operate in 24-bit fixed point. If the summed mix bus hits 0 dBFS at the console's physical outputs, the DAC will clip, causing severe distortion on the main PA speakers. Maintaining conservative channel levels ensures that your Master Mix Bus operates with plenty of headroom.
5. Gain Sharing and Compensation in Digital Splits
In modern stage setups, Front of House and Monitor consoles often share a single physical digital stage box (like a Behringer DL32 or Shure Rio3224-D2) over a digital network. In this configuration, whoever controls the analog preamps controls the raw input level for both consoles. If the FOH engineer changes the analog gain mid-show, the Monitor engineer's mix will be thrown into chaos.
To solve this, professional systems use **Gain Compensation** or **Gain Sharing**. Once the analog preamps are calibrated and locked at soundcheck, the consoles activate digital gain compensation. If FOH makes a late-stage analog preamp adjustment, the digital network automatically applies an equal and opposite digital trim to the monitor feed. This ensures the monitor mix levels remain completely unaffected, maintaining independent fader control for both mix positions.
If your overall mix is too quiet, do not gain up the inputs to compensate. Instead, turn up your master fader or increase the output level at your system processor. Preamps set input quality; faders set mix balance.
